What is meant by FACE - Family and Community Engagement?
Karen Mapp defines family engagement as a full, equal, and equitable partnership among families, educators, and community groups to promote children’s learning and development.
An equity-based approach to family engagement recognizes the injustices that exist due to years of stereotyping, discrimination, and implicit bias that have resulted in institutional and systemic racism. Equitable family engagement is a process in which power dynamics are intentionally shifted for our most marginalized families, family expertise is honored and utilized, authentic relationships and partnerships with families are nurtured, and families feel knowledgeable and empowered to support their children and advocate for their needs.
In Karen Mapp's work on the dual-capacity framework for family-school partnerships, she describes 7 conditions that are key to effective family engagement initiatives.
