Mission & Goals

Shoreline PTA Council - HiCap Advocacy committee was formed to support the needs of our Highly Capable students (K-12) in the Shoreline School District through the collaborative efforts of our parents, educators and administrators. Our group’s objectives are to build community among HiCap families and to increase awareness of the academic/social/emotional needs of HiCap students.

Our main goals are:
  1. act as a liaison between OSPI, school district and the local PTA/schools,
  2. organize events for training and awareness purpose,
  3. develop collaborative relationships with school district administration,
  4. offer community connecting opportunities
  5. support and assist Hi-Cap students towards self-advocacy

Recent Events

  • Nov. 20th 2025, Thursday - Einstein Middle School Library, Dr. Austina DeBonte presented to HiCap parents on "Leaning in to Spiky Strengths for Highly Capable Students".  Highly capable students often have asynchronous development, with strengths and challenge areas not just in academic topics, but also in various aspects of social and emotional development. It can be tempting to try to smooth out these differences with the goal of creating a well-rounded learner. However this approach is rarely effective, and doubly so for twice exceptional students. Instead, giving students time and support to develop a spiky strength pays big dividends in developing self-confidence, establishing a growth mindset, increasing their college choices, and can be hugely satisfying.
