LEGISLATIVE PRINCIPLES,
RESOLUTIONS & ISSUES

DO YOU HAVE AN IDEA FOR A PLATFORM ISSUE OR RESOLUTION? The WA State PTA changes the legislative platform annually at the Legislative Assembly in October, so all issues, new and current, need advocates. Is that you?

Our work has included:

Anti-bullying
Education Ombudsman
Traffic mitigation (speed zones, sidewalks)
Healthy foods in schools
Removal of corporal punishment in schools
Breakfast before the bell

Here are the questions to ask if you think you have a great idea:

Are you passionate about it?
Is the issue state-wide in scope?
Is there a policy remedy?
Is there a sense of urgency?
Is the timing right?
Can this be framed as bipartisan?
Can a broad base of support be built for this issue?

LONG-TERM
Resolutions: These outline the opinion and will of WSPTA to address statewide problems.

LEGISLATIVE PRINCIPLES: These give long-term guidance to our legislative advocacy and can be updated at the fall legislative assembly.

SHORT-TERM
Priority platform, “Top 5”: This short-term platform sets priorities for the upcoming legislative session. Issues are voted onto the platform for 2 years. In year one of the 2-year platform cycle, delegates decide the Top 5 priorities. In year two, delegates may update positions, or add to the Also Supported list. This priority platform is established by voting delegates at the Annual WSPTA Legislative Assembly. Legislative assembly will be in October. All PTAs are welcome. Delegates must be present to vote.
